My Italy Packing List
If you could care less about a history nerd’s itinerary but just want to know what to pack, I have you covered.
Temperature-wise, I now have learned that summer in Italy now lasts until the end of October. July and August are unbearable (like, dangerously hot) according to locals. I did not plan well enough with my wardrobe considering we were outside most of the day. But I did pack some of the right things:
Packable sun hat TBH probably a good idea to bring pins bc it can get windy.
Comfortable, quick-dry bras These are my faves. Yes I know they only work for the lesser endowed.
Soak Scentless Travel Detergent This is the real trip MVP. It’s so easy: Add one packet to a gallon of water in a sink or bidet (not sorry), soak your items for 15 mins and you’re done. No rinse needed.
Linen shirt dress This is currently mostly sold out but they bring it back every spring. It has pockets. Definitely pack this or something like it. Or 5.
Portable charger Like the toothbrush, a single charge on this thing has outlasted the trip and I used it every day.
Handheld fan Chic and essential, especially in tight spaces like churches or musems. You’ll thank me later.
Quickdry cooling sweat towels Yes, these are the same ones I use while on the Peloton.
Crossbody fanny pack These are machine washable and hold a lot. The strap is a great adjustable length for many body types (I’m plus sized) I have 2 now.
4-Panel Hanging Toiletry Bag When you are constantly unpacking and repacking, this thing is clutch. I used to be one of those girls with chic leather cosmetic bags… but honey, convenience has won out.
Street Sneakers Vejas and Sambas are always a good idea. And look great with dresses.
Anti-itch stick For the inevitable mosquito bites… No window screens in Italy.
Lightweight daily face sunscreen I use this everyday no matter where in the world I may be.
Travel white noise machine Like a baby, I must have white noise to sleep. But really, this will block out the incessant noise of mopeds buzzing around the streets.
Rechargable Travel Electric Toothbrush The battery lasted the full 2 weeks and then some without charging.
Things I packed and didn’t need:
Travel hair dryer (every hotel has hair dryers now)
Raincoat/umbrella (how would you know though?)
Extra clothes that were not weather-appropriate, black clothing (I underestimated how hot it would be)
Clothing I would generally recommend:
Daytime: Linen, cotton, natural, breathable fibers in light colors, shirt dresses (I wore the same linen shirtdress on 4 separate occasions)
Evening: A single nice dress. a couple dinner outfits (tops/jeans), and a single, versatile pair of dinner shoes like black sandals or flats.
Extra underwear and bras (like, a lot.)
